Don't underestimate the power of a great mix on a song.   Mixing a song properly can be the determing factor of the public receiving your song and becoming successful.  I have made songs that I didn't like until after they have been mixed.  A listener will never get the full impact of a song no matter how good the song may be if the mix doesn't compliment what was recorded.  This is the most important thing in the song making process even more then actually making the song itself.   Because like I said no one will fully appreciate the song without a quality mix.  To be succesful as an artist you must except and understand this process.  There are several different things that can be done during mixing or processing that can all be used to take your song to a higher level of quality.  One of the most important aspects of mixing is using compression,  compression in simple terms is the act of lowering the dynamic range and frequencies of your voice after being recoreded.  As you are rapping or singing your voice releases all types of frequencies that are high and low at different parts, so when you add compression to vocals this feature of pro tools allows you to alter those different frequencies so they are smoother and more in sync with one another instead of being to high and noticable taking away from your listeners hearing experience.
